Django Unchained and Race

Question 1 –

In the first video which is the opening scene, it’s shown that two white brothers have 5 black slaves with them chained up so the ethnicity is represented in a way of slavery here. So which of course the black people here are the minority subject here. It is showing times from the 1800s at a time where slavery was a thing and white people were horrible.

The second clip is showing Django at the location of the three bounties Dr Shultz is looking for, Django decidedto confront them himself with nice clothes and kills them, the way the ethnicity is represented here is a mix, it’s showing still that the white people are slaving the blacks but it’s also showing that Django has got an advantage over them this time.

Question 2 –

There are two races identified in the two clips, black and white. It’s very clearly stating that this is slavery.

Question 3 –

The ideology of the two scenes were to show that black people were slaved, they wanted to be free, some got free and then white people suffered from it. It’s also to show that how angry the black people where when Django didn’t even hesitate to kill them and whipped them himself.

Question 4 –

Overall, it’s mainly on a positive representation of a black slave being freed and finding a relationship with Dr Shultz and finding out that he’s a good bounty hunter. There are some bad representations of course with the whole slavery aspect, it doesn’t exactly show it in a light way. It’s brutal and showed how evil white people can be.

Question 5 –

There is no tokenism I can see within the movie as both races play vital roles.

Question 6 –

Theres a few editing techniques within the two svenes, one thing I picked up was that the first scene was very dark as it was shown in a dark matter, slaves being held captive and had to walk bare feet. showing darker colours and lighting. and then in the second the editing and camera shots were all bright, light and loud to show that he is a free man getting revenge.

there’s also other techniques shown using close ups of Djangos feet looking very bad when Dr Shultz takes the chains off him to clearly show how bad his feet is.

others where there are slow motion scenes to make it a dramatic effect. again the scene where Django is the scene where he was whipping the white male which was slow motion

the first scene had a spotlight too, to focus on the slaves.

There was a very quick reaction shot in the second clip of Django whipping the white male and then it quickly panned and zoomed into black women in the window in shock.
