Unit 5: Task 2 – Advertisement

Primary Research – The main reason why I based my research mainly on Primary is because I like to get other’s own opinions from my own surveys. It’s faster and more effective when doing work. You can get your own statistics but also you know that real people have said opinions and thoughts.

I did a quick survey for this company to ask a few questions about what they think about the target audience, I also asked if they knew Quorn and would recommend it to people.

The first question was – Have you ever heard of Quorn?

Screen Shot 2018-11-21 at 13.56.32.png

Here are the results. So, of course everyone has heard of Quorn. This doesn’t show much but acts as a filter question. This will affect the rest of the answers too as if someone said no and then continued the the survey it just wouldn’t be good or accurate results.

Question 2 I asked if they eat it a lot.

Screen Shot 2018-11-21 at 14.08.13.png

Out of six people, only one person says they eat it a lot, which again, doesn’t exactly show much but important for people who are interested. This would’ve benefited from more people doing this survey to make a more accurate and worthy result.

Question 3 – I asked what year Quorn was founded in, I did this because if they knew what year they are possibly interested within the company.

Screen Shot 2018-11-21 at 14.12.36.png

Surprisingly, 5 people got it right. Which can mean that they are familiar with the company again. This can be pretty good on the company’s behalf since people are interested and will probably recommend it to others.

Question 4 – What target audience would you say Quorn is for?

Screen Shot 2018-11-21 at 14.25.04.png

All people basically said vegetarians or vegans, some went further sand said about people who want to diet from meat. This question is important because it’s the main reason why I’m doing this survey. It shows how everyone I asked knows about Quorn and what their purpose is for people, and what people they are targeting. This question will give us the most useful information compared to the others since people know what the company itself is and so will many others. Again, this would’ve benefited from more people answering.

Question 5 – I asked if they would recommend Quorn to an upcoming vegetarian or someone who wants to cut on meat.

Screen Shot 2018-11-21 at 14.25.44.png

All people have said that they most likely or will recommend it, which is good as it’ll make more exposure to Quorn for their target audience to try and use their products. This also helps a lot since people are giving good reviews of the company, if it were all bad reviews then no one would want to eat from there and just continue meat eating.

Secondary Research – (URL’s I used; https://www.quorn.co.uk/) The reason why I added secondary research is because having both types of research shows more statistics and information. Secondary helps when the source is reliable, especially when it’s from Quorn themselves. since everything is 100% true.

When researching on the Quorn website, I have found out that the company was founded in 1985. They use free range eggs but they do have vegan options for vegans, which implies that they are trying to get everyone on their product. I found this on their website, “Quorn products are currently available in the UK, USA, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, The Netherlands, Italy, Republic of Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Denmark, Finland, Philippines, Germany, Thailand and Singapore.” Quorn is in so many countries around the world which improves their target audience.  This link is very valid and credible since it’s from Quorn themselves, which is the best way to find out about their information.

URL – (https://www.campaignlive.co.uk/article/mcdonalds-serves-quorn-burger/202826)

One thing that came to my mind was an obvious one but also a good one, which was “would Quorn be targeting people from McDonald’s?” Which sounds stupid, but yes they actually do. In 2004 Campaign did an article about McDonalds making a deal with Quorn to make Quorn burgers. This is the reason why, this is written by Ben Bold in 2004 for the company Campaign; “The launch comes as the chain adopts a healthier image to improve declining sales. It recently introduced fruit to its menu and now provides detailed nutritional information on its foods.” This article helps with it being a known fact that Quorn is the healthier option when it’s in the McDonald’s menu as a healthier option and recommended option, shows how much this brand has become so popular and how it’s trying to get more people into trying their products by doing partnerships. The article is also reliable since it’s a big news outlet who many people believe in.

URL(s) – (http://www.meatlessmonday.com/images/photos/2010/08/mm_general_kit.pdf)

– This one is checking the statistics of Meat Free Day/Monday and how it will affect people’s lives and animals too.

This was said on meatlessmonday.com; “Going meatless once a week can reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. It can also help limit your carbon footprint and save precious resources like fresh water and fossil fuel.” This is to just show that for going without one day of not eating meat can help your health so much overall, and even the environment.

This website is the official website for the campaign of Meat Free Mondays, so just like Quorn, they are trying to get people to eat less meat.

The website goes on about of course how it’s healthier and how it reduces cancer and other deadly diseases. They go into more detail than the other one by explaining money issues that come with eating meat, so by spending more money on fruit and veg, and other things like rice, beans, etc you can save a lot more money by just spending a day not eating meat. “According to Office for National Statistics figures for 2014, the average UK family spends £15.80 a week on meat and fish, with £4.20 and £3.50 being spent on fresh vegetables and fresh fruit respectively.”

More reasons are because that we are killing too many animals for where they aren’t able to reproduce others, so within a few 100 years or so, and even now certain species will come extinct or even endangered. “Agricultural intensification and expansion, and overfishing, are major factors in loss of species and biodiversity – if present trends continue, over the next 100 years or so there will be a global mass extinction of species.”

Identifying other advertisements aimed at the same target audience –

I got all my information for this section from “https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/best-meat-substitutes-benefits-are-they-healthy-vegetarians-vegans-quorn-tofu-a8459941.html“. Which is a pretty reliable news source that are popular within many people.

There are many counter parts to Quorn. Here are a list of them;
– Tofu
– Tempeh
– Seitan
– Jackfruit
These are all the same as Quorn, perhaps with different tastes.
Tofu I’ve heard is a good one, it adds nutrients and has all the animo acids your body needs to function. It’s also a good source of calcium and iron.
Tempeh is fermented unlike Tofu. It’s also high on protein which helps with gut movement. Although with Tempeh, it is pretty high on calories yet still pretty healthy for your body.
Seitan is a good products for vegetarians who cannot eat soya like the last two products I spoke about include Soya.
Jackfruit has a resemblance to pulled pork which is making it popular by the day. But isn’t good with protein, so they say you shouldn’t eat is as a main meal, add protein products to it. It is pretty low on calories. The Independent website said that all these healthy meal options help lower the risk of cancer, diabetes, etc.
So there is a product for everyone, vegans, vegetarians, people who can’t eat Soya and it’ll keep continuing to do so.
Evaluating research process-

In this research, what I’ve discovered is that there are plenty of alternatives to meat that people can actually enjoy. And soon it’ll become even better.

I have also found out that basically everyone knows about Quorn and has at least tried it once. All the research I did was useful to this task as I found out what certain ingredients Quorn uses. How different people use quorn and what their thoughts are about it.

Unit 5: Advertisement Assignment Task 1

ASA – Advertising Standards Authority –

This is the UK’a biggest independent advertising regulator. They basically make sure to not make ads air that can cause harm, abuse, misleading or offensive. They also take in complaints and constantly monitor adverts to make sure they are applicable.

I will be researching the brand and target audience for that brand in this task.

My brand is called Quorn, was founded in 1985 and is an alternative for meat. So, people who would want to use this are either vegetarian, vegan or just trying to cut down on meat by using Quorn. Their target audience is for anyone who is one of those three things I just listed.

NRS Social Grades – There 6 basic grades to have, here they are;

A – Higher managerial, administrative and professional
B – Intermediate Managerial, administrative and professional
C1 – Supervisory, clerical and junior managerial, administrative and professional
C2 – Skilled manual workers
D – Semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers
E – State pensioners, casual and lowest grade workers, unemployed with state benefits only.

The interview the NRS include are detailed questionnaires about the occupation of the CIE to make sure they know what social grade you are. There are classifications systems available which are used instead of Social Grades. They include;

The Government Grading of Social Class
ACORN
MOSAIC
Financial ACORN
Financial Mosaic

QUORN

For the TV commercial I have thought about doing a shot of the calendar saying “Free Meat Monday” and then it panning to someone about to eat their tea and it has meat in it. So then someone will run through the door, then shout “NO!” and then throw the food off their plate and give them a new plate with Quorn on it. Then I will walk in and talk about giving up Monday’s to eat no meat.

3 adverts I chose.

Viral Advert – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNJKWVmK-GM

This advert was for he 2018 Superbowl and it was made by Australia. The advert starts out as a film trailer then goes onto just be an ad for a travel guide for Australia. I think it’s very clever and humouress.

Narrative – Most of the ad is narrated like a film trailer, the man talking about special events in the film, while you have dialogue of the two main characters having fun in Australia.

Style – The style employs that it is a clear comedy advert that is also a parody too, since the start goes off like a bad movie trailer then cuts to them just really doing activities in Australia.

The technical features of the advert are pretty decent, they’re not anything new or special but good for what it is. You have the average film black screen with text, cool music, the voiceover guy who has a nice voice, etc.

I believe the advert uses CGI, when they were near some sort of Australian animal which I think is a CGI animal. They just used this for comedic effect.

The adverts message tries to be both obvious and hidden, if the person isn’t very interested then they’ll think it’s some average movie then does a twist, but if you’re looking into it you can obviously tell it’s a bad film on purpose to for the twist.

The advert does not have any emotional feelings within it.

The advert does use celebrity endorsement, the biggest face of Australia, Chris Hemsworth. They have him in the advert for three reasons, one is because he’s an actor, and people will think this is a trailer, two is when the twist is revealed and shows it’s just asking to visit the place, it makes sense to have him since he’s basically the most popular person there, and three, they use his face to boost up the viewers and get more people involved.

The adverts characteristics are that it is funny, quirky, smart, ironic, or even cringe.

The advert’s target audience for mainly for families of all ages to visit them or just adults in general, but anyone can watch the advert since it’s PG.

My second advert is a TV advert/commercial : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qo27xcVS5I

The narrative of the advert is to show that they sell gifts that everyone will love, the advert hints of the dog wanted to really bounce on the trampoline when he sees the other animals are doing so. So, when the kid sees the trampoline and sees the dog run into it first, it just shows that anyone can like their products. The ad in’t so much based on reality because it’s a bunch of animals having fun jumping on a trampoline.

The style it employs is drama with a hint of happiness and emotion.

The technical side is actually very good on this, from the good sounds, well fitting music, and obviously good editing.

This advert does use CGI, very good ones actually. The foxes and skunk in the advert are CGI and look amazing. They used this because they wanted animals in their advert, and it is a bit hard to get real animals jump on a trampoline, so they animate it and because it’s so realistic it makes people feel with it.

There is some hidden meanings, maybe they have products hidden in the scenes of the living room, but people may think that the ad was just to sell the trampoline. And then the other one is the main reason why they do these adverts, it’s to make people familiar with their company, to know when they think about or enter their store that they are heart-warmed and happy. This also counts as an emotional response from the viewer, to make them happy and warm during Christmas.

The advert does not have any celebrity endorsement.

The advert’s characteristics are happy, emotional, warm, funny.

The target audience is for anyone, anyone can watch it. They would want parents to go to their store and buy gifts too.

My next advert will be a radio advert : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xD0e33sv5WU

The narrative of this radio advert is to show that they sell very nice beds for you to get your beauty sleep in, or you will have morning face, in which this implies people will look at you funny and run away. It’s kind of unrealistic but at the same time kind of is since no one is going to truly run away is your face looks tired but they may look at you funny.

The style does employ humour, since people will find it funny people having morning face and running away.

You can’t base this advert off of technical editing apart from the sound editing, which is good. They use good sounds and voices. Which also counts for SFX.

A hidden message could be here, since it’s a radio ad you can’t see what’s going on, which is the point. I think the main reason they did this is because you cannot actually see the persons morning face, so it makes you think of what it could look like and possibly want to buy a bed product from them to prevent this, if they believe that.

This advert doesn’t show any emotional response and no celebrity endorsement.

The products characteristics are that it’s funny and possibly a parody.

The target audience is mainly for adults to buy their products but can be aimed at kids to laugh at.

Django, Four Lions, Wind River, Get Out Essay. – Unit 4

Introduction

The films I will be discussing about in this essay are all about race or have a high representation about race. They are; Django Unchained (Quentin Tarantino, 2012), Four Lions (Chris Morris, 2010), Wind River (Taylor Sheridan, 2017) & Get Out (Jordan Peele, 2017). The only one that isn’t high on issues with race is Wind River. I chose this for a reason, since all films have a heavy issue with race I decided to pick something that lightens it a bit, just to show the contrast. The film has no discrimination but heavy use of Native Indians. Django Unchained is a historic film about slavery, Get Out and Wind River will count as contemporary. The essay will be structured into little sections, one for each film. Starting with Django. The reasons why I chose both of my own movies is because one is a little heavy on racism and the other isn’t. I want to see if there is any huge difference.

Django Unchained

Django Unchained is a film about slavery in 1858, about a slave who becomes free and changes through-out the film. It has heavy representation of both black and white people while also having both representation of genders. Black people are treated as slaves and inferior to the white people who act superior, they own black people and treat them worse than animals. Although, there are certain black people in this film that almost have the same privilege, let’s take Samuel L Jackson’s role for example, the character is black but acts like a white male to the other black people, whom are slaves but Leonardo’s character is on top of him and he listens to him, he’s sort of in-between.

The film has the alvarado theory in which they make certain characters made for a purpose, wether they’re dangerous, pitied, exotic or humouress. The film definitely has dangerous and pitied from scenes of all white people thinking black people are dangerous, like the scene of Django riding through town on a horse and everyone is looking at him weirdly and then from our eyes we see to pity them, we feel sorry for them and glad that this isn’t a thing now.

The role of Django changes through-out the film, at first he’s this weak slave who can’t defend himself, cold, lost and slaved. The film uses a spotlight lighting effect to show how bad his feet look when they are chained and barefoot, it makes us feel pity for him. The chain suggests us that he is of course been captured and slaved and walking many miles barefoot in the freezing cold. Once he gets free, he becomes more confident, wears better clothes. This is clear to see when Django hunts down the Shaffer brothers, he walks into the ranch in a bright blue outfit with upbeat music in the background. This shows that he has become more powerful than he has ever been and this is shown in the camera being lowered down to show that he is taller and that people are looking up to him. As he continues, he starts to think he’s better than the slaves, starts mocking them, until he realises that he met his counterpart, Samuel’s role who foreshadows that it could be him in the future and how he’s acting, he then starts to realise then and becomes humble.

There’s a lot of codes of conventions, some are as plain as they can be, from white people showing to be racist, etc. Blood to show that it’s violent. These are both connotation and denotation. There is decoding theory in Samuel L Jackson’s character in which makes the audience think about his story since it’s so weird and confuses audiences. A scene at the start where Django riding through town and the camera was on the balcony, then showing his head passing through a noose, which implies that that’s what people want to do to him and that black people were almost always hanged. This is classed as symbolism and also a connotation as he is in danger in this town. This is also polysemy as the scene has many different meanings.

In Candyland, it’s a mix between black people being treated poor or well. Most black people there are slaves who are whipped, beaten, etc. Then you have some black people who are maids who just clean the house, you again have Samuel’s role who acts like a white person. One character is called Broomhilda, Django’s wife. She is dressed in nice clothes and is sent to guest’s room for sex but doesn’t have a choice and has to serve the white male.

The film is set a few years before the civil war, which was done to stop slavery, which happened. Reference here for backup; “https://www.history.com/topics/american-civil-war/american-civil-war-history” Source is reliable as it is from History.com, a secure website.

Four Lions

Four Lions is about four extremist Muslim men trying to become suicide bombers. The film’s approach is that they are stupid and silly, basically taking the mick out of them. They are shown this way because it is making humour of a bad thing, but to also show that these extremists are actually stupid and don’t think about situations where people can be severely hurt but only care for themselves.

The film’s representation on race and culture can go one of two ways, one being that they do have a good representation of Muslim culture as there are plenty of other Muslims in the film acting like normal human beings, not doing anything extremist wise, just playing football in the park, going to social clubs and praying in their house. The other can be that they are assuming all Muslim people are suicide bombers but that isn’t true. It’s just a film about Muslim suicide bombers who 3 of 4 are actually Muslim. There is one white main character who has been radicalised and gets annoyed when the other members speak in their language that he doesn’t understand. But, he believes his faith is better than all of them as that’s how he’s portrayed in the movie. He wants to blow up a mosque full of Muslims because he’s white. The other members, who are Muslims definitely don’t want to do that as they will not go to heaven for taking one of them.

They make out the main character. Omar, as a really likable character, he has a wife and a kid and he acts normal around them and his wife seems okay with him being a suicide bomber which is confusing. But that is what suicide bombers truly believe, if they go out like that then they will go to heaven so that’s probably why the wife seems okay with it.

The film talks about events that have happened in the past decade of it happening. They speak about the London bombings in 2005 and speak about 911 from 2001.

References to back these events up;

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-33253598” This is about he Suicide Bombings in London 2005, source is reliable as it is from the BBC.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/events/the_september_11th_terrorist_attacks” This is about the event of 911 that happened in 2001. Again the source is reliable since it is from the BBC, a respected news outlet in the UK.

Wind River –

Wind River is a film about recent times set around an Indian reservation in Wyoming. This is a common issue within these types of areas because of the lack of law and open areas. The film show’s their culture, their behaviour and overall just what some people do. A girl who was found dead in the snow, died from frostbite but also was raped and beaten mystery needed to be solved.

The film of course has many different representations of race/ethnicity or culture. All of the main cast apart from three people are Native American. One of those are very familiar with the location and has even raised a family of his own there while the other one is from Los Vegas as part of the FBI and is not familiar with their culture and goes into the crime scene with normal clothes and could possibly die as the weather is deadly snow. These show as connotations as she’s clueless and unfamiliar by people.

The film often show’s off culture and interests by showing the audience all the decorations around the house, from statues and pictures of native people on horses to cool designs and even how they dress, their hair and how they speak their own slang.

There are loads of wide shots showing off the vast open areas showing barely any civilisation unlike most countries white people would be living in.

I think this film has some sort of reverse alvarado theory. In which in this case means the white people in this film are actually made out to be dangerous perhaps. There’s a scene where the main characters go visit the girl’s brother who refer to the girl’s boyfriend as a “cracker”. This could show that the people in this land don’t approve or like most white people as they find them dangerous, which brings us up to the murderers. Who were all white and are acting all dangerous and are using this place to take advantage of as they are feared of perhaps.

Get Out –

This film is about a man who has a girlfriend as is meeting her parents, but is scared that they might be racist. He goes to their house and realises that there are all weird things happening, from all black caretakers that are acting weird and the parents also acting strange. He then finds out that they have been taking black people, doing surgery on them to switch over their brains to the black people because they believe that their bodies are more advanced than theirs,

One scene in the film is when they are on their way to the girl’s parent’s house and they get pulled over by a cop, the girl automatically assumes that he got pulled because he is black and then starts to argue with the cop. This shows hidden meanings that people assume that she’s not racist and hides the true meaning that is shown at the end.

Another little hidden meaning I saw on a YouTube video which can be active audience theory is that when they get into the house, the parents show the man around, they walk into the kitchen and then talks about the basement. They say “you wouldn’t want to go down there, there’s black mould everywhere.’ And in the YouTube video it is the director answering questions about the film and they ask him about that quote referring the black mould as the people they use for hollow moulds for use when ready. He said “Yeah, that’s what I meant, I did that….” in a sarcastic tone as he didn’t really mean it like that. This this is good audience theory as it makes the audience decode everything.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBvcngHRTFg&t=533s” The part starts at 6:38 and is posted by Vanity Fair on the 1st of December 2017.

From all the information I found on this essay, I found that always using stereotypes is not a good thing, it only works in certain situations and I won’t be doing that in my work as it doesn’t introduce anything positive.

Evaluation – Unit 4

My work fulfils the brief. I did four films that all have a big representation of race, culture and ethnicity. Most of it all equally spread out between 250/300 words apart from the Django one as that is the biggest and longest film out of all four.

The areas I found difficult was referencing the research for the films, main reason is because all of it was based off my notes and my thoughts when watching the film. I did reference the films but other than that. So I did some research for my last film, Get Out, I referenced the work I found and the film itself. I wouldn’t say I gained any new skills within this work.

My strengths would be that I wrote a lot of notes for the films which shows how involved I am with the subject but also shows that I could write more than the word count if needed to. I watched 3 of the 4 films more than once so I have a better understanding of what is going on, it allowed me to dive into it more than other’s who saw it only once. Another strength I would like to point is with the movies I chose, I chose one that is subtle with their culture, race and ethnicity and that isn’t spoken a lot through-out the film and allows for hidden messages and meaning and then the other is highly based on the person’s race and culture, it allows me to work both ways and see how differently it’s played.

My weaknessess would be that I didn’t do a lot of research for these films, I didn’t really feel the need to as I wrote a lot of notes for the film and understood the subject matter a lot and had a lot to say about it. Another is that I only watched four Lions once, I could’ve watched it again and spoke about the stuff I missed through-out the film.

I managed my time and recourses well, I basically watched a film a week and wrote about it through-out that week.

The feedback I gained was good, people enjoyed that I spent more words on Django as it was the biggest film, they liked how I chose Wind River as one, they said that it was good that I did a film with Native people in it as it was different. They also liked the difference between the two films I chose, from one being subtle and one being a major issue in the films, they said it adds new perspective for writing and understanding.

The Plan – Unit 4

For this assignment I was told to watch four films, two they chose and two I would choose. The films are; Django Unchained & Four Lions for the chosen movies. The movies I chose are going to be Wind River and Get Out. We were told to pick films that had a representation on race, culture and ethnicity.

For my first film I will be going about Django Unchained. I will watch it and analyse it throughout based on the representation of race, culture and ethnicity. Watching through it and writing down notes.

The second film will be Four Lions, a film about Muslims wanting to be suicide bombers, but in a comedic term and basically taking the mick out of suicide bombers and their stupid thoughts.

The third film will be Wind River, a film about a hunter in Wyoming who finds a dead body and needs to partner up with an FBI agent and solve the murder. The film itself doesn’t have a lot of reason to be on this list as the two main characters are white, but everyone else around them is Native-American. So there is a big representation of Native people, but although it isn’t as much as the other films, I still wanted to do this as it’s different.

The fourth film is Get Out, a very good film about an interracial relationship who is meeting the white girl’s parents. You feel worried at first as her parents are pretty old and are small minded but as they get into the house, a whole new story and experience have begun. The film deals with racism on a weird level.

Camera Workshop

Aperture –

A hole/circle that makes light pass in the lens and throughout the camera.

A small aperture doesn’t give any background blur unlike higher apertures. This would normally be used within establishing shots.

Aperture is known as “F-Number” or “F-Stop”.

Also the smaller the numbers on the aperture means there is more aperture.

They work like this;

F/2.8 F/4  F/5.6  F/8  F/11  F/16

F/2.8 is a shallow Depth of Field and F/16 is a larger DoF.

Shallow tends to be a smaller blur, adding more created a deeper depth.

High Aperture;

Depth of Field –

Images have a large or deep DoF, this is where both foreground and background are sharp.

You would use this when you want to focus on a certain object, a flower for example, there would be loads of flowers in the field but if you wanted to just focus on one it would blur the other flowers and then make the main flower sharp and the main

Shutter Speed –

This changes the brightness of your photo and can create dramatic effects.

Fast shutter speeds are used at fast paced action, an example would be a dolphin jumping in and out of the ocean.

A slower shutter speed are, of course, slower. They can take up to a few seconds or minutes to close the shutter to gain more light. This is tend to be used on stuff like waterfalls, stars in the sky, objects in the night, so basically very dim environments.

ISO –

This is a camera setting. This will either brighten or darken your photo. The higher the ISO, the brighter.

When you double the speed of the ISO, you double the brightness.

Soundtrack Design

Overview –

I was told to choose between 3 scenes from movies that are heavily detailed in sounds, they were from Lord of The Rings, The Matrix and Star Wars: Rogue One. I chose the Lord of The Rings one as it seemed more fun to do so and then remove all sound from the original and then remake the sounds with non copyrighted sound effects from freesounds.org.

The Process –

I first wanted and started to do the Rogue One video, until I couldn’t find a good sound effect that I wanted. So I decided to go for the Lord of The Rings one. I only wanted to do around half of the video because the whole video was around four minutes long. I spent around 2 and a half lessons editing and finding the right sound effects & music. I then asked Scott to check it and he told me to add a few more sound effects and so I did. Then I exported the video, uploaded it to Vimeo and now here I am.

The Types of Sounds & The Purpose –

I used a variety of sounds in this video. Obviously the most common one I used was sound effects, the examples I chose were sounds from lighting and thunder rumbling, feet stomping, spears stomping, growls, arrows flown and making impact and the sound of pulling back the bow. I did this because that’s what the people were doing within the video, without it, then it wouldn’t make sense. I also used atmospheric sound effects such as; rain, wind blowing in the background and again thunder and lighting. This makes it more immersive when you are watching it yourself. You can understand where they are and what type of situation or environment they are in by adding these sound effects. So by me adding these in people know that they’re in a rain storm while its thundering and it’s also windy. I used one more sound and that was faint background music. I wanted to add this because it adds to the scene. It makes you feel excited for what’s about to come while also mixing the cinematic feel of the song in the scene. This is a non-diegetic sound making it so the characters within the video cannot hear the music, only you, the viewer can. I also have examples of diegetic sounds in this too, the first sound effects I talked about at the start of the paragraph. The atmospheric sounds and general sound effects such like the thunder, rain and growls can all be heard by the characters.

How I Used Sound to Create Meaning and Mood –

I added thunder and lightning sound effects with the extra wind blow in the mix to make it seem more realistic and dramatic. The main sound I used to create a mood was the music I chose. The music is a non-copyright piece I found on YouTube and when I was looking for it I was looking for something that had an epic sense of scale, while also being a dramatic sounding score. I found the one I used and I thought it fitted in very well. It helps the scene a lot in my opinion. I’m glad I chose this song. It also created a sort of meaning to the scene. Where the song felt like a build up song for the battle to come, which was the first half of the video.

Evaluating Personal Strengths I Have Identified –

Well since this was my second time editing and my first time adding a handful of sound effects and I think I did a decent job at it, with just trying to learn the ways of the software and how to add sounds in certain places just clicked in. As I said before I really like the music I chose for this project and how I was able to do over half of it within 3 hours.

Evaluating Areas For Further Development –

I can definitely improve my editing, but I am still learning it I am pretty sure it’ll get better. I also am not too happy with some of the sound effects I’ve used. They are from a website where you’re able to get sound effects for free than can be uploaded by anyone. So, they aren’t going to be the best match or use for what you need. Some were too quiet or the quality wasn’t the best either so it kind of made the video not as good as it could’ve been. I also could improve the fact that I’ve only done half of it, so an improvement will be to finish the whole scene full of sounds.

Viable Solutions For Further Development –

A solution with the editing is that i just need to use it more, get help and possibly watch some editing videos on YouTube in my free time. I can spend more time into looking for more sounds and find other sounds on other free websites too, or even make my own.

Django Unchained and Race

Question 1 –

In the first video which is the opening scene, it’s shown that two white brothers have 5 black slaves with them chained up so the ethnicity is represented in a way of slavery here. So which of course the black people here are the minority subject here. It is showing times from the 1800s at a time where slavery was a thing and white people were horrible.

The second clip is showing Django at the location of the three bounties Dr Shultz is looking for, Django decidedto confront them himself with nice clothes and kills them, the way the ethnicity is represented here is a mix, it’s showing still that the white people are slaving the blacks but it’s also showing that Django has got an advantage over them this time.

Question 2 –

There are two races identified in the two clips, black and white. It’s very clearly stating that this is slavery.

Question 3 –

The ideology of the two scenes were to show that black people were slaved, they wanted to be free, some got free and then white people suffered from it. It’s also to show that how angry the black people where when Django didn’t even hesitate to kill them and whipped them himself.

Question 4 –

Overall, it’s mainly on a positive representation of a black slave being freed and finding a relationship with Dr Shultz and finding out that he’s a good bounty hunter. There are some bad representations of course with the whole slavery aspect, it doesn’t exactly show it in a light way. It’s brutal and showed how evil white people can be.

Question 5 –

There is no tokenism I can see within the movie as both races play vital roles.

Question 6 –

Theres a few editing techniques within the two svenes, one thing I picked up was that the first scene was very dark as it was shown in a dark matter, slaves being held captive and had to walk bare feet. showing darker colours and lighting. and then in the second the editing and camera shots were all bright, light and loud to show that he is a free man getting revenge.

there’s also other techniques shown using close ups of Djangos feet looking very bad when Dr Shultz takes the chains off him to clearly show how bad his feet is.

others where there are slow motion scenes to make it a dramatic effect. again the scene where Django is the scene where he was whipping the white male which was slow motion

the first scene had a spotlight too, to focus on the slaves.

There was a very quick reaction shot in the second clip of Django whipping the white male and then it quickly panned and zoomed into black women in the window in shock.

Unit 2 : Task 3 – Proposal

Audience I Am Targeting & How –

The main audience I am targeting is of course, teens from the age of 14+ to young adults from the age of 20 – 24. The reason for this big age gap is that these people have either grown up in social media and technology or grown up without it and then at an early stage of their life become to make it an aspect. I will be asking older people in my factual film on their opinions also so it is not bias on just young people’s opinions.

How I will be doing this is by creating a survey/questionnaire on surveymonkey.com and will be asking some of my friends and people I know online. I will be spreading this questionnaire within a link to people on, funny enough, social media. For the two older people I will be interviewing for the film I will be asking them questions personally.

What the Topic is and How it Fulfils the Brief –

My original topic was about obesity within teens, but I changed it after I couldn’t think of anything good for the film and research and although I do prefer the obesity topic I am now doing it about social media. The main topic title is “Social Media and the Impact it Has on Teens.” I chose this because I realised that younger people in this generation has become so dependant and stuck to it, even myself is. I found it so interesting because when I was growing up from the ages of 1 to 12 I didn’t use social media, or as much as I do today and how it’s the same for everyone else or even younger people in this generation who were that age and using social media.

The reason it fulfils the brief is because it is a main issue/topic within this generation’s society and of course it’s very relevant too. You hear stories about cyberbullying, cause of depression or suicide from it, catfishes, threats, just any issue you can think of. My plan is to find out what people think about it from all ages (mainly younger people) and to know if they are aware of how big social media is now and how it has impacted so much of their lives and is a lifestyle for them.

Production Plan & Justification for Crew Choice –

My plan for production is to obviously create a 2 minute factual film about my topic. My plan is to interview three people in this film, one 18, one 42, and the other 66. So a wide range of ages and ask them questions in between. While doing this I will also be filming little clips to add into these interviews to make them more dramatic and interesting. These little clips will consist of close ups of phones, computers, someone using a phone, someone walking down the street on their phones and if I can think of anything else clever to add I will. I am planning on having the equipment for a few days just in case I need any reshoots. But the filming process will not be anything special or hard as it is pretty simple.

The reason I chose these 3 people for my cast/crew is because of their age and their availability for me, they all live very close to me so I don’t have to travel far. Of course I have the age groups for their opinions and thoughts so I can get good results and information.

What Equipment and Locations I Will Require –

For the equipment, I will be needing a DLSR Camera to record the interviews and little clips. This is pretty obvious of why I need this.
I will be using a microphone that will be attached to the camera for the best audio I can get and audio is going to be very important in my film as I am interviewing people.
I will also be using a tripod for the interviews as it helps keep the camera steady and it helps me look at the questions, it’s also professional for interviews.

The locations I require isn’t much. All I need is a basic room in my Nan’s house to do the interview on, a street outside my house where the weather is fine, if not, then I will continue to just use the house.

The general plot, structure and message I am trying to communicate with people is what their thoughts and possibly experience within social media growing up. How it impacted them, if it even did. Knowing why they become so reliable on it and then asking thoughts from some older people too.
