Test Shots Unit 6 Music Video

These pictures are showing the area that we will be filming around for the car park scene with lights, for this we will need a tracker for our camera, either a DLSR or a C100 camera along with the trackers, for both curved and straight tracker. A tripod and deolights for the type of shot we are using, We needed a certain small open area in the dark that had an open space, a power source nearby and permission, which is why we are going to be filming in this location in the car park in B block. And so of course, for this we would need access to power. Which is why I took this photo of the door as we were allowed access to use an extension lead for the lights and possible smoke machine. We will need the certain area of the car park to be closed for the time-being for health and safety reasons. The only problem we may encounter during this is if it rains or if is quote windy, which won’t affect anything but the smoke machine. 51286854_334824810456636_9183196775329038336_nHere is the door we were allowed to have access to. Below we have the car park area to the left of the top shot, as you can see it will be pretty open without all the cars which is suitable for our trackers.
51395619_602849170164669_4981622782971346944_nBelow we have the wide shot of the car park behind the top picture, which most of this we wont be able to use, apart from it may being in the background.

51479851_658520564565023_8602697130269736960_n

Again, below here we have a shot of the area we are allowed to use whilst recording, from that pole at the back to where the camera is is our area, very open without cars. 51925961_2163190180662357_6176975149963673600_n (1)

With all these images, there will be cones blocking off this corner and we were going to move the cones but for health and safety issues, as there may be cars coming through and either hitting us or equipment. But we also decided to keep them there as we do want an industrial look as we are already making sure there are visible lights shown in the footage.

Test Footage using the straight tracker –

Screen Shot 2019-02-13 at 01.37.03.png

This was the only good shot we got within the test footage out of 4 little videos. This one was good for about 2 second but the pacing was off, we will definitely need to work on that when doing so in the actual video, I will also work on the ISO and DoP within the actual video too. This may be a tricky thing to manage but I’ll come back and analyse the final product. I need to make sure that I do not show the tracker on the floor, also it didn’t seem I could make many camera movement as it messed the video up a bit.

The next photos here will be from the big room, our main location for this video.

In the pictures above, you can see the camera we used, how much space we had within the music video, how our main setup looked like with the tracker, soft boxed and tripod along with the laser lights that will be used to create this video.

The laser lights were a massive help to us, we were able to have them change to the beat and have two colours at once, even creating purple when needed. They also had green for Ludacris. Without these certain laser lights there is no way the video could look as it does now, so the laser lights were a main priority to use and a massive help.

Next we have the camera I used, the Canon 800D, a very nice camera that had a few tricky ways to use but turned out fine in the end, the viewfinder was a touch screen one which made using all the settings easier and faster to use.

Below the camera picture, we have the main set up with the tracker and tripod, now the tripod isn’t on it because we just got doing a close up shot with the lights, the tracker was a lot of fun to use and although they’re a pain to pack and unpack, I loved using them and they will bring an impact on the video itself, giving it some movement and life.

Also, for the tracker I did a lot of versions from slow paced movement to fast paced one, this will give us more footage to edit from and more camera shots to use.

The two last pictures show how much space we have for this video, it was a great pleasure having this location for our music video. It helped a lot for the curved tracker as it was a very big thing to have in a room.

failed first use tracker

here we have is the first shot on the first day of the lights, soft boxes and tracker use, as you can see it didn’t turn out too great, the camera is slightly out of focus and the ISO is too high for the aperture, this was my fault as I was just getting used to the camera and tracker movement. Also in this shot you can see a lot of shadows in it and you can also see the extension lead and the tracker rail too. Which again was my mistake and on the next few days I made sure to not have these show and also have the ISO on a proper level that worked with the shutter speed and aperture.

Evaluation of Storyboards- Unit 6

On the 12th of February me and the Director drew and wrote the storyboard for all major scenes being used within our video, decided what we wanted, what camera angles I wanted in those shots, if it was a low angle, high angle, eye level angle, if the shot was using a tracker or handheld, etc.

I thought of some new ideas for the ending of the song, how the camera will move in a 360 spin around people dancing and then panning upwards to the lights. We should for the end of the video this will be a nice little exit from the club.

Another was when Usher walks in with possibly a spotlight and Spotify on his phone instead of the aux cord with an over the shoulder look. And the same with Ludacris when he enters. he’ll most likely have a spotlight on him.

Another big light change we thought of and which we may have the lighting change to the beat., this just helps the overall look of the video, if the light is changing to the beat people may find that satisfying.

I think all these changes made will help the videos flow in the editing, and I am very looking forward in using and practising with the tracker, to get a good feel of it.

Posters for Unit 6

Poster52483194_307775516608836_8358132445370908672_n52276866_2003048193083857_7886114126496268288_n51805385_2262866467328220_675796611351183360_n

Here we made a poster shown in the first image for extra background people for when we film our music video with a certain date, time and what they should wear.

The following images show that we have printed off many posters and stuck them around the college to promote this, these images are just our evidence to make sure we did print and stuck posters.

Unit 6 – Task 1 Essay

Introduction –

Here I will be explaining the purpose of music videos, how they evolved and picked certain music videos that could possibly inspire me but what I find good in a music video itself, if it represents their brand, their music style, the video itself and if they used any certain codes of conventions or any other hidden meanings.

The Purpose of Music Videos –

There are many many purposes of having music videos, one to bring hype to the album and sell it. It’ll bring more attention, which brings more money. Money is also the main reason of course. That’s why you will often see product placements within the video itself, either subtly doing so or it being a major part for the sake of it. Which is a big issue nowadays since so many people illegally download the songs and listen to them for free and so that means the artist and the record label will get mo profit, so they rely on products and advertisements in their videos to gain that income. Along the years, music videos have changed drastically, back then, it was pretty simple, no main use of VFX or proper cinematography but yet some where amazing, like Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. A very cool and intriguing video back in that time, and still iconic to this day. This has happened in many genres, from Hip Hop mainly. Back then, it was to grow larger and for more people to hear, also probably making them listen to the album too, since no one illegally downloaded music they would have to pay for it. Music videos back then where basically advertisements and they could not have product placements as it was not allowed. They made people have a different take on it, they would sometimes begin to remember the video more than the song itself.

Nowadays, music videos have the same purpose, for it to be an ad to make money and sell more sales on their album. They are now allowed to have product placements which especially helps since a lot of the population illegally download music. But also, now a single or even an album could be specially made for a movie, film or TV show. One example is with Kendrick Lamar and Black Panther. He made a whole new album just for that film to both promote the album, and his film since the songs are played in the movie. Another cool example of music videos with movies is musical films like The Greatest Showman, the whole film is based off music and when the music plays in scenes it’s almost like it’s made to be a music video which can be uploaded onto YouTube and gain even more popularity and money. This can also happen with video games also. There was an old game for the PS2 about 50 Cent, within the game trailer he made his own music for the game which is basically self-promotion. The game had a cheat code system where if you put in a certain code it unlocked all music videos to all the songs made for the game. This again is self-promotion but a pretty clever way to make people watch the videos.

Select Three Music Videos and Analyse Them –

I will be doing 3 types of genres and music video, the first one is kind of different and still only know becoming popular. The video is from Blackpink called “Whistle” and is Kpop. URL; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dISNgvVpWlo

Screen Shot 2019-01-16 at 15.09.41.png

This is one of the first stills of the video. It showcases a pink Nintendo controller, which does have many meanings. The first is that it’s an obvious product placement and the second is that the colour is pink, it’s in their name. It’s just showcasing their colours and what their brand is.

Screen Shot 2019-01-16 at 15.13.51.png

Here we have one of the group members (Lisa) sitting on a chair along with a fast movement of the camera that goes overhead, it also continues to another scene here;

Screen Shot 2019-01-16 at 15.16.23.png

It moves to a medium shot of her sitting properly on the chair rapping the first verse of the song. This also continues to other members of the band, making them all the main spotlight of this video which is a typical trend in pop music videos.

Screen Shot 2019-01-16 at 15.18.54.png

This shot is one of the last overhead shots, I believe they all show off some of the future locations in the future. You can also tell they are looking straight at the camera, engaging in audiences attention and engagement. You can also tell that the video is very well produced and looks very high budget, which is the case with these Kpop videos. They’re all over exaggerated and has an insane amount of colours that are saturated.

Screen Shot 2019-01-16 at 15.26.48.png

This shot is the thumbnail of the video so whoever edited and uploaded this thought that this was the most eye catching scene for audiences to click. It’s a good use of VFX and also can show that this group or video are out of this world, which some people could agree on.

Screen Shot 2019-01-16 at 15.30.38.png

This scene is one of my favourite ones, it’s around a 60/70 degree angle and looks awesome, after this shot it zooms in and out of one of the characters which is also a popular trend within pop music. Since Kpop is becoming so popular so of course they will use popular trends to maintain that and their brand.

My second video

My next video is called “1-800-273-8255” by Logic. It’s a song about people who are suicidal with a powerful video ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kb24RrHIbFk

Screen Shot 2019-01-21 at 09.21.20.png

This first shot of the video is a man running down the street in the dark, possibly either a jog, or something serious and he is running from that trouble. This will be showcased later, but for now it’s leaving us questioning. Logic’s brand is for everyone to be equal and loved, so by making a whole album on that subject and this being his most popular song will showcase that brand. You can also see that this video looks very cinematic, looking like a short film type. Which it is. screen shot 2019-01-21 at 09.26.12

This next scene is right after the first shot, showcasing a celebrity actor, Don Cheadle. This can be called celebrity endorsement to make the video more watched and known.

Screen Shot 2019-01-21 at 09.28.13.png

This scene is a few scenes after the previous one, it’s showing a few of them as the main character is a child, probably making us feel more emotion for this person.

Screen Shot 2019-01-21 at 09.31.58.png

This next scene shows us that the main character is gay, and his father has found his men magazine and continues to have a talk with him. Showing that he probably doesn’t understand it which makes the main character feel worthless, since his parents don’t seem to approve. Screen Shot 2019-01-21 at 09.34.30.png

Here we have the first scene but circled around to show his face, from the back it peaked people question what happened or even why he was even running in the dark. His face shows a lot after the scene with his dad.

screen shot 2019-01-21 at 09.41.39screen shot 2019-01-21 at 09.41.53

These next two scenes show he stayed over his “friend’s” house and slept in the same bed as him, obviously showing they’re both in the start or in a relationship, then one of their dads walks in and finds them, while the main guy is embarrassed and walks out

Screen Shot 2019-01-29 at 14.24.30.png

The final shot I will show you is near the end of the video, where we have this wide shot of a bunch of people at their wedding. And their dads have understood their children and respect them. And although the artist is a rapper, mainly in hip hop, it just shows how his brand caters to so many other things and not just parties, clubs, cars, money.

The next video is another hip hop song but with an actual hip-hop style video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvTRZJ-4EyI”
Screen Shot 2019-01-29 at 14.28.26.png

This song called “Humble” By Kendrick Lamar came out in 2017 and became very popular. This first shot has a single beam of light flash onto his white robes from the window, probably to showcase the actual humbleness that he is trying to pull off.

Screen Shot 2019-01-29 at 14.33.58.png

Now, in this shot it seems like he is showing off his money, but in fact he is actually being ironic of the fact so many other rappers do this. It is most likely fake money, which also can show that other rappers use fake money in their videos pretending to be rich.

Screen Shot 2019-01-29 at 14.36.23.png

Here we have the 360 camera with the circled world effect, making it seem like he’s huge compared to the world. The shot seems to tell he’s a god, he’s someone to be looked upon but yet with the song talking about being humble may be ironic.

Screen Shot 2019-01-29 at 15.00.56.png

This is representing the last supper, not sure really what it means overall but probably shows that Jesus was very humbled and he’s comparing himself to Jesus perhaps, and also saying that there’s always a snake in the group like Judas who would rather have money than actual friends and would do bad things for money.

Research Unit 6 – Club Scenes in Movies or TV Shows

Since my music video is being based within a club, I will need to research some club scenes in movies or TV shows in order to find inspiration or why they used certain lights/angles.

My first film will be from John Wick 2, this film is special to me cinematography wise and has club scene. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0y0vZnKLS2o)

John wick 1

In this first shot, it doesn’t show much and doesn’t actually look like a club, but it is a big club in the film and this is set in Rome, hence why the walls are all made from rock, this club is clearly taken place in some old building which Rome is known for, for this shot I won’t be looking at the walls or lighting, but in fact the people in the background that make this scene feel so full.

As you can see there are many people in the background of just this one shot, it makes the club feel full and adds a certain atmosphere, for my video, we will only have a limited cast so I cannot use this type of shot in my video, the people will have to all tight together giving the impact of a full club.

jihn wick 2

In this shot, here we have an actual real looking club/concert. Here I will be looking into the lights used and how effective they may be. The red mixed with blue is a classic club colour, many can interpret this to their own meanings, the red could mean that because they’re drinking so much, possibly finding someone to have sex with, or anything along these lines, red could mean lust or just sin in general, the blue could possibly mean freedom, or even with the whole 3 colours here put together have the prime colours of the American flag which also targets around freedom. Many people think they have a lot of freedom whilst in the club and don’t bother to think twice of what could even happen next, like a possible shooting here when John Wick gets caught by guards.

joh wick 3

Here we have a close up of the crowd and John himself, the camera pace =is very fast and is hard to find a static shot, which makes sense as it’s a club, there’s high movement and action going, on, which I’ll keep in mind when filming mine. Here the lights are just pure red and because there’s a shootout going on, this could possibly mean that the red stands out as bloodshed, fear or sin.

The next TV Show is a very new one called The Umbrella Academy, this club scene from Episode 7 I found very interesting.

umbrella academy1

Here we have one of the proper rave clubs, where there’s a bunch of neon lights and people using drugs, etc. This first shot is one of the first shots of this scene and they’re basically establishing shots, showing all the colours and how people are dressed. This close up of a man with neon glasses is really cool and I would love to be able to have this certain look in my video.

umbrella academy 2

In this shot I will be focusing on the pinky red colours and how it was made from all the other colours, the main lights in this club were red, blue and yellow. All of these together made this pinky colour. Although this could be a coincidence but pink is normally the colour for love, and within this scene the man on screen is trying not to take the drug that has been thrown to the ground and take his brother home from the club. The pink showcases his pure love for the drug while he’s trying his best not to take it, also furthure into the scene he goes in for the drug and sees his dead boyfriend laying there, which can work for the lighting too. Although I won’t use this certain pink or meaning in my video, I am using red for lust and this is as similar as I can get in this scene.

The next one I will be looking into a Music Video for it, which is appropriate as I will be doing that.

This music video will be 50 Cent – In Da Club. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qm8PH4xAss)

Screen Shot 2019-03-05 at 06.04.18.png

This first shot I have is 50 Cent in the club walking around with a bunch of people around him, although he is not in the centre of the shot the light is shined on him the most, making him just as seeable.

The colours are mainly a very dim red, which is one of the colours I am using in my video.

Screen Shot 2019-03-05 at 06.08.17.png

This next shot is him in the corner of the club chilling with all the other people, showing that he isn’t just always dancing he is also sitting down talking to people.

The composition here is well done since you can tell it’s a corner and the way the people are sat still shows this is a club. No lights here that I would use although 50 is still has a main spotlight on him.

Screen Shot 2019-03-05 at 06.11.33.png

Here we have a mid shot of all the people dancing in the club, without 50 in the shot. It’s just to establish many people are still dancing.

The lighting here is similar to the first shot I showed, it seems the main colour scheme here is red.

Screen Shot 2019-03-05 at 06.13.31.png

here we have 50 cent in a recording booth with a piece of paper reading his lyrics while rapping it – a pretty common trend used in rap videos which may be implemented in the Ludacris parts.

The video has a lot of fast cuts and barely shows much club scenes, when they do appear though it all looks very similar, probably showing that it’s just a basic club party and there’s nothing too special about it. It featured a lot of people dancing, a variety of races and genders which you’ll typically see within the club. All the people were dressed like you would see them in the club at this time period. A few wide shots of people dancing and just the same red/spotlight lighting throughout all the video.

For my video, I don’t think many of the aspects of this video really came to me, it all seemed pretty average. Especially the lighting.

Unit 5: Task 3; Proposal

What audience am I targeting and how?

The target audience I am trying to attract is anyone that is a vegetarian or vegan within any age group, people who want to cut down on meat and start a new healthy lifestyle that consists of nice proper products from companies that are meat free, and from this, hopefully gain more once people start off to do Meat Free Monday.  How I will do this? I will make a questionnaire making sure people are aware of Quorn and what they do for the community and to test them for the FMM. Making an advertisement in 3 ways, one viral, one TV and the other a radio one. All will reach to all audiences from of course people who watch TV, people who are on the internet a lot, and even for people who use the radio a lot. That will be the main way of trying to attract my target audience.

Production plan, justification for crew choice –

My production plan is simple in ways, but also might be annoying to film as it’ll probably have to get it right in the first take. I would say for the most part it’ll work out pretty well and won’t need a lot of reshoots, but if that is necessary then I will obviously be okay with reshooting. My crew choice has been chosen and it will consist of myself as a works-man for Quorn telling the audience about Quorn products and Meat Free Mondays. The reason for this is because I wasn’t in my last project and decided I should be in one and this makes sense. The next will be my Nan who in this advert will be acting as the person who should be eating Quorn on the Monday but either forgot or just isn’t doing it. I chose her because she would seem like a normal old person on the commercials you see for food products. The next will be my friend Jack who will be the person who runs through the door and smacking the food off the plate. I chose Jack because I’ve filmed with him before. he’s comfortable in front of the camera and doesn’t mind me taking awhile to film.

What equipment and locations I require –

First off, I’ll need a camera with a microphone, the microphone will help me pick uop the audio better. Then I will need a tripod, which will help for the simple pan shots and talking scenes for stabilisation. I will then need some lights to help the lighting in the location I will be in as it hasn’t got the best lighting. This will help with the grain and dimness that’ll show up in the footage if it didn’t have good lighting. For the radio, I will need a microphone again, a mixer possibly for any change in sound if I need it. For locations, I will have 1 location in the video but will probably shoot in two locations and see which one is better. One will be dining/living room of my Nan’s house as she’ll be eating, or another being outside in the back garden of my Nan’s house on the eating table there if the weather seems okay enough. The lighting might make it easier or better on the footage, plus we will have more room to film.

The general plot, structure and messages I am trying to communicate –

The general plot is just someone forgetting that it’s Free Meat Monday, then eats meat, someone just rushes through and throws the food off the plate, handing then Quorn nuggets and then placing the box on the table to show off that it’s Quorn. That’ll be for the TV commercial, for the viral video will be an extended version of that with me walking on the screen. For the radio advert I think I will do the same concept as the TV and viral one but in a way that it’s obviously just in audio. So a microwave going off, footsteps, maybe steaming food, then running, plate smashing, then talking about free meat mondays.

Recording process – Unit 5

Recording process for both TV and Viral ads took around 4 hours for both.

The equipment I brought in was a DLSR Camera, Rode Microphone, and 3 portable lights. We started off doing okay, lights were all set up, camera worked fine until we found out the microphone was being really fussy so we couldn’t use it. Luckily my ad didn’t require as much dialogue so we just used the camera microphone. It actually turned out pretty well and I am happy with the audio results.

The work with the lights worked well although because of the lack of space we had we sometimes had to use 2 lights which meant you could see some shadows on the wall.

My peers worked well although there were some goof arounds, but we all did a decent job while being filmed, I myself think I could’ve definetely done better.

Overall although we had a few problems, I will take note and not to so next time.

Unit 5 – Task 4

Pre Production Schedule –

Week 1 – Looking for ideas, writing them down, finding out research, researching many adverts and analysing them.

Week 2 – Finding out target audience – what do they aim to feature? conducting primary research, making survey and analysing it. Conducting secondary research and referencing them. Evaluating that process. Selecting cast, crew and finding out what equipment I will need.

Week 3 – Conducting a proposal, communicating the ideas for my client. Doing some of the pre-production work, officially planning out.

Week 4 – Finishing off pre production work, working on radio advert, finishing up recess, test shots, risk assessment, camera script and audio log, booking equipment.

Week 5 – Filming the viral and TV advert, then evaluating that with write up, rushes, edit logs, camera script, possible reshoots, hopefully edit some footage.

Week 6 – Continue editing, screenshots of editing, all exported as ProRes422 QT file, MP4 file and .wav or .mp3 file and then hopefully starting evaluation and gaining feedback.

Evaluation: Task 7 Unit 5

In this assignment, I was assigned to do 7 tasks and create 3 advertisements about the same product, which was Quorn. To promote Meat Free Monday or World Meat Free Day to the world and all target audiences. A 30 second TV Advert, a 1 Minute or so Viral Advert and then to finish off, a 30 second Radio Advert.

Task 1 was to research 3 Popular ads, one TV, one viral and then one radio. I chose the 2016 John Lewis ad for the TV as that’s what comes to mind when I think of a classic TV Advert, this could also count as viral ad but I decided to do another ad for that. For my Viral ad i did a travel guide advert that was in a form of a film for Australia that includes Chris Hemsworth. And for my radio ad I did a simple ad for Ikea that includes people wanting to buy a new bed. After this we then we were given 10 questions to ask about the adverts and how they fulfilled  the brief. I think I chose good ads and did a good job on this, it was pretty simple and not hard to do whatsoever.

For task 2 it was for the primary and secondary research and why I included this type of research into this product. First I started with my primary research, I made a quick questionnaire in order to get some good results, in which I did get although I should’ve asked more people to complete it. I then analysed the questionnaire and wrote about how effective they were and what the top answers meant. I then did my secondary research which was to get information from other sources and to make sure it’s referenced. I covered a few online articles that were credible that explained what people’s thoughts on Quorn was and on Meat Free Monday. I got some pretty good results although I wish I did research a bit more into it as I could’ve got better results and possibly would mean better results.

For task 3 I wrote a proposal for my 3 ads, at this point I knew what product I would be doing, what my 3 ads would include and what I needed for all 3. Which I put my reasoning into the proposal of why I needed it.

For task 4 I had to do a pre production schedule which allowed me to keep on track, within 6 weeks it would help me stay on track. Some of it worked for me, although I did switch up some tasks from time to time. I had stuff from task 2 that I did while doing task 6. Although it stilled worked in the end so it’s nothing bad. Just wished I had more time to edit my videos.

For task 5 I started filming, this was my favourite part to do although there were a few mistakes and unavoidable situations that happened, like the microphone not working properly so we had to use the camera microphone but this wasn’t too bad since my ad doesn’t have too much dialogue and the parts that did have dialogue ended up sounding good, probably because there was no background noise. The space we recorded in was fine it just with the lights, it was pretty small at times so it made us use 2 lights instead of 3 but that was for only 2 scenes. There was another one also where I used a POV shot but because of that it broke the line of action which I didn’t notice. I forgot to buy actual buns for the burger so we had to cut bread into a circle which was my fault.

In-between task 5 and 6 I recorded my radio advert which went really well although I messed up my lines a bit but it wasn’t bad. I think I could’ve came up with better dialogue but people seemed to like the script, which was the same concept as my TV and viral.

Task 6 was to edit all 3 ads. I started off with the radio ad and did half of it, then did my TV ad and finished that all throughout one since my viral ad just has extended clips to purposely make it longer. I then finished my radio ad and added all sound effects within all ads. I wish I had more time to edit all 3 so then I would know I would definitely be happy with all 3. Since I had so much other paper work to do and I couldn’t do work at home because of inconveniences.

If I could re do this whole assignment, I would stick with the same concept for all 3 ads, but of course improve them. I would not break the line of action, I would remember to get the correct props for the video, I would try and use all 3 lights and make sure the lighting is very good since I had a few shadows in a few scenes. I would plan it out better in order to get the best results. I would try and spend more time editing and making the editing the best it can be which will help me improve my editing skills. I can try and make the timing better for everyone since one of my cast had to do something important through-out the day and then through-out the weekend I could borrow the equipment on.

Feedback –

I showed all 3 ads to people in my class, providing them with 3 questionnaires where I asked for their opinions and thoughts and how I could improve.

From all the screenshots above it shows my feedback I received from all my ads, the majority of people said it was good as it was ironic and that made it humours to attract people into buying Quorn. Some picked up on the mistakes I did, from some poor audio and line of action being broken. So I will listen to this feedback next time and try better.
